This Saturday we took the opportunity to present a cheque for £300 to the Bidford and District History Society to support their fundraising efforts towards the installation of a Word War I Roll of Honour.
The Roll of Honour for those servicemen and women from the Bidford on Avon parish who served in the First World War would be, fittingly, placed in the Crawford Memorial Hall, named after Dr Crawford who not only served in The Royal Army Medical Corps during WWI but returned to, and practised as a doctor in, the village in the years after the end of the conflict.
The Roll of Honour would be a definitive recording of all those from the parish who served (around 260), and in nearly 70 cases died, for their country in a hall specifically built in memory of one (Dr Henry Crawford) of their number. The board would provide an opportunity to mark their service and sacrifice as well as a physical focus for reflection on that service and a visible expression of the village’s gratitude for it.
The picture below shows Bidford and District History Society member Rodney Crompton (R) accepting the donation from Alcester & Bidford Rotary President Vaughan Blake (L).
Many thanks to everyone who visited us for a Big Breakfast last Saturday, hope you all enjoyed yourselves. Here are a few pictures from the event. P.S. please feel free to come and have another breakfast this coming Saturday, October 12th in Alcester Town Hall.
Yes, it’ll soon be October and that means it’s time to tuck into an Alcester & Bidford Rotary Big Breakfast. On Saturday October 5th we’ll be at the Crawford Hall, Bidford and the following Saturday, October 12th we’ll be in Alcester Town Hall. Serving from 9am until 12 noon both days. So come on, treat yourself and if you need an excuse, it’s all for local, national and international good causes.
This morning we were visited by 1060 District Governor Bala Jaspal who told us about her plans for the year. Bala also told us about the Rotary District Conference, her charity for 2019, Heads Up and we discussed plans for World Polio Day which takes place on October 24th. Alcester & Bidford Rotary will be lighting up St Nicholas church again this year to highlight the fact that polio has been 99.9% eradicated worldwide thanks in part to the fundraising efforts of Rotary International.
Hopefully you’ll have tested our catering skills at the Alcester & Bidford Big Breakfasts, and now’s your chance to try something different…

Two of our members, Geoff Powell and Pauline Lowe, who run LowePowe Noodles loaned their noodle trailer to Alcester & Bidford Rotary for use at the Edgbaston Convention Dragon Boat Festival on June 8th.
Not deterred by a very wet day, we managed to serve bacon rolls and noodles to brave but very wet rowers at Edgbaston Reservoir. The event had to be cut short due to the conditions but congratulations to EHS Red who were the winners on the day.
Funds raised were added to the Alcester & Bidford Rotary charities account for distribution at a later date.
